10 things...

10 things you probably haven’t done meme. It’s not like I haven’t mentioned most of these on my LJ anyway. Longtime readers, feel free to yawn.

1. Was the youngest person in my hunter safety class and got the best score on the written test.
2. Got suspended from high school for "willful defiance of authority".
3. Won two gold medals at the Junior Nationals for my sport.
4. Played in a Grateful Dead cover band.
5. Chained shut the administration building at my college in an anti-apartheid demonstration. Even though there was a picture taken of me doing it printed in the student newspaper, they somehow couldn’t identify me.
6. Completed a Scared Straight program as part of a felony diversion.
7. Did "security" for Cesar Chavez then drank beer and ate fries with him.
8. Got arrested for protesting at the 1984 Democratic Convention while chanting "No War! No KKK! No fascist USA!"
9. Went on a date with the daughter of a member of Jefferson Starship.
10. Got recruited and paid to speak on a national panel discussion about cheese. More than once even!

Bonus:
11. Played organized pee-wee football for four years before high school. C’mon other football players, out yourself! (in most places in this country this would be expected of me. But here I think it’s unusual)

to get your license under 18, or to get a discount on the license, or to get another license after you were caught doing something bad (like poaching, hunting out of season, or excedding limits) you had to take a state certified hunter safety test. You had to be 13 to get a license but you could take the test in the calendar year you turned 13 so I took it at 12 and 2 months.

it was multiple choice and essay. for example, descriobe the 3 basic differences betweeen shotguns and rifles.

see, I knew we were destined to be friends from an early age.

We probably stood next to one another in the hot dog lines at the games.

That is way, way worse than listening to Journey!

I lived in an 8-person collective house in upstate NY. There were 4 punk and four deadheads. Da punx, myself included, were forming a band so we started doing punk-style Grateful Dead covers just to annoy our housemates. Understand that in Ithaca NY in the late '80s, Grateful Dead covers played live EVERY NIGHT OF THE WEEK. It would have just been a joke, but then a touring band asked us to put on a show so we put ourselves on the bill. The rest was history. A very, very, very minor bit of history, but still history.

you. totally. rock.

Now, see, even if you were deliberately butchering the Grateful Dead, it stops being funny when you think about the fact that you're gonna spend the rest of your life knowing all of the chords to _________. (insert the name of wretched Jerry Garcia "song")

Do you really want to wake up one day in the old folks home one day, and find that you can't remember the name of the nice young man who brings you your food, but you can still remember all the lyrics to "Truckin'"?

swoon!

i am SO proud and excited to have known someone (2 people?) involved in a lockdown at that place (see #5)! hoo whee!

re: grateful dead cover bands abound in that town. more recently - okay, 3 years ago - it's the zydeco craze. and, of course, the hippies are still everywhere. though they come out more once it warms up. and, yes, i do love some of them.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2005-02-26 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
you didn't see us back in the day, did you?

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2005-02-26 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
ha. see, since i never really learnd how to play bass, I never really learned the chords. I have no idea how to play those songs anymore and actually, when I hear the Dead, I think it's a slow cover song cuz I only remember our versions.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2005-02-26 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
well, I liked "St Stephen" because we sang it "St. Stephen with a rose, up my butt withagarden hose' and had an interval with cops rushing the stage to bust hippies for pot. Then there was our cover of how we envisioned Flipper doing a cover of the Dead's cover of Woody Guthrie's "Going down the road feeling bad".

liar!

[identity profile] slutbunwalla.livejournal.com 2005-02-26 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
omg that's funny.

VandS...
I was just thinking about a few of their songs that I miss. I should reacquire them. They were just fun songs to sing along to. Even if I was hitting the notes more often than they were.
