Surfers Against the War . I love that they wouldn’t have mobilized if the Orange Alert hadn’t messed with their waves.

Oh, the Lower Haight. I felt kind of tender for it yesterday. Even though I’ve lived here for over 8 years, I still don’t really identify with this as my neighborhood. But I had a very sweet walk yesterday that made it just feel right.

First of all, it felt like summer. San Francisco summer. The fog rolled in from the park and it was wet, but not rainy, and you couldn’t see very far down the block. The grass had just been cut in Dogshit Park and for a moment it smelled like it was almost time for school to end. Then I remembered I was an adult so it meant that it was almost time to drink beer on the stoop. Then I remembered I would have done that in high school too, so those thoughts weren’t incompatible.

There’s a beautiful work of graffiti on Steiner near Haight. One stick figure person with arm upraised (either for "Graffiti Power!" or simply because it’s in the process of tagging) has the word "Graffiti" coming out of its mouth. A stick figure next to it, somehow managing to look bored, says, "How subversive".

I walked by Rosamunde our sweet little German sausage place. They’ve managed to piss off a bunch of foodies so I now love them even more. Some of you out there in Gordonzola land may remember my own contempt for foodies. While I appreciate their enthusiasm, most like to turn eating into a competition about who has the most esoteric knowledge. Anyways, Rosamunde started making hamburgers one day a week for its regular customers. Because it was new and undiscovered, some people on a certain foodie website heralded them as the best burgers in town. This attracted a huge following of snobs and assholes from outside the neighborhood, coming to the Lower Haight for the excitement and danger of slumming for their meat. Rosamunde decided to stop making the burgers because they didn’t want to deal with these people. You can see the reaction on the foodie site . Please note especially the lack of self-reflection and the giving of unasked for business advice.

One bit of bad news however, Naked Eye is still in serious trouble. Though I had heard from one friend that closing was imminent, the owner didn’t seem to think so when I saw him yesterday. They are having a hard time making rent though since the landlord raised it substantially. I told him that I’d donate some copies of Zine World* because he’s always been so supportive of zines. If anyone else out there has some zines, you could do worse things than giving a bunch to Steve as a donation to help him get over this rough patch.

Then I stopped off at Walgreens , came home, and made an entry to this LJ community .

Anyone else up for a descriptive walk through their neighborhood. Maybe as a Mr. Rogers tribute?

*don’t worry J, my pocket, not yours. By the way, have you sent ‘em yet?
