L. Allen
My relationship to pop culture is odd. While I am over my punk rock hate of pop, and have fully embraced some very dubious songs to the embarrassment of friends, I don't really seek out pop music. Once it becomes ubiquitous, it finds me. Though truly, I spread my love for the "Thong Song" and "Get This Party Started" to friend groups who may not have been otherwise exposed. I sometimes am Patient Zero to the non-FM set.
Still, I sometimes make mistakes because I don't follow things that closely. Most recently I was perplexed by the sudden popularity a certain political dub feminist poet who I didn't think had done an album since the '80s. Why was everyone suddenly talking about her? She must have a new album, I thought to myself. Weird, I thought she was way too political to hit a mainstream audience.
Then, while staying in a friend's apartment who had cable I realized what was going on. Lily Allen (warning: music in links starts right away), not Lillian Allen . Now it all makes sense. I do kinda like the I-smile-when-you-cry-song.
