Mr. Schnitzel went off his feed yesterday for the first time ever. He's had the occasional stomach upset -- and other, grosser dog problems -- but ever since we figured out what to feed him at about 2 months he has not been a picky eater. He is, as dogs tend to be, always hungry and just as happy to eat paper, leaves and carpet as his regular food.

But starting on Sunday and continuing yesterday he wouldn't eat anything and just slept all day. He vomitted up his water and we had to go outside every couple hours. I was really worried! Can you tell this is my first dog as an adult?

Finally, this morning he ate a little pumpkin and rice and held it down. He's sleeping in the "sun" right now, but it is his normal sleep. He growled at a bird about 15 minutes ago so I know he's doing better. Yesterday he slept right through a roofer working (on another house) about 20 feet from his head. This is a dog that barks if someone walks past the window inside the old folks home 2/3 of the way down the block.

Anyways, he seems to be on the road to recovery. His beard is orange from the pumpkin. It looks like health.

Here's a picture from two weeks ago at [livejournal.com profile] reveritas's place. He's had a haircut since then.

Oh, Hermann!

His digestive problem comes just as my pup has had her first similar not wanting to eat issue. Alarming, when a creature with so clearly undiscerning a palate suddenly refuses chow.

Get better, furry white doggie who is slightly less furry than pictured.

exactly. I was all, "you wanted to eat another dog's poop last week and you won't eat this cute and tasty little lambykins?"

Thirded. We make our dog a mix of cooked oats and raw turkey (with some pureed veggies, olive oil and a powder of brewer's yeast, bone meal and other stuff). All that time, thought and care, and 10 minutes later on the walk he's eating a three-day old French fry on the sidewalk.

Yeah.

Sometimes there's just no reasoning with them. ;)

If I was ever unsure of my beagle's health, the one sure sign was whether or not she barked (or howled) at outside noises. She was my first dog (at 33) since I was 19, though I had lived with Lysella's big, mellow, old lab/chow mix for a few months before she had to be put down from a relapse of cancer.

Oh, puppy! They get better. Like the video.

What I'm surprised at is that you got a photo of him sitting still (and, um, alone) from that entire day.

Dude. I've owned pets nearly my entire adult life, and I still worry about them when they display unusual behavior - especially if it involves not eating. I'm glad your adorable little guy is okay.

oy, the stomach issues

How many times did I boil beautiful lamb only to serve it with rice to my dog! My Marlowe had an incredibly sensitive stomach, but that was likely because he survived Parvo Virus as a puppy. Please, do not let your dog eat dog shit! It may be part of being a "dog", but it can also be a death sentence. I am glad he is well! You might also consider rivers and the like. Marlowe once contracted gigardia (I think he got it because his chew toy fell in the river and I did not clean it out). gigardia is so gross that I saw a humanesque diarrhea face on my German Shepard (and I knew that was messed up).
Give my best to the Schnitzel!
