Sunday Jactitation made a wonderful brunch for our house and Nodoilies and Southbay came over to help eat it. We talked books and grad school for hours. The grad school conversations in my house just never end. Thankfully I didn’t have to work because co-workers told me that after being cooped up with families for the weekend, people had lots of aggro to get out of their systems and were looking for retail workers to unload upon.

I watched the Niners get absolutely destroyed by the Ravens and then headed East with [livejournal.com profile] anarqueso and a couple of other friends for a potluck at [livejournal.com profile] felicks’s house. Felicks lives with an old political friend of mine and when I said I hadn’t been there for 13 years, the East Bay people thought I was saying I hadn’t been to Berkeley for 13 years. Sensitive much? Geez.

[livejournal.com profile] amarama co-hosted, and many LJers were there, including some I met for the first time. I think it would aggravate my RSI to name them all. I brought a vegan "tuna"-noodle casserole. I had a lovely time despite the hosts’ insistence on playing party games. My favorite moment was when we were in a small group arguing about astrology. Contrary to cliché, the group was evenly divided with all the people who actually grew up Californians disbelieving.

Ha. That was confusing. Tried to comment on the extra-long version of this post and got "no such entry." Then found you'd broken it up.

My favorite bit from the whole collection of posts was the last couple of lines in this one. I'm (somewhat unaccountably) annoyed with any overwrought display of belief in astrology these days.

It's not surprising that native-born Californians would be fed up with the stuff, given that all their lives they've had to put up with the half-baked conception that California is some sort of New Age paradise (not to mention the constant influx of desperate neo-hippies seeking same).

It's like people from the "Rainbow Family" who show up to my workplace expecting a welcome. ;)

and sorry for the confusion. I'm feeling petty today.

Man, the club was nuts. We had two fights (one of which was quite bloody), several visits from the cops, and general evil all around. Far worse than usual.

"It's the most wonderful time of the year..."

For the record, I don't believe in astrology either.

yeah man, those family holidays unleash so much hate into the world, don't they? Personally, mine just tired me out.

The stars do decry

Was the excess/lack of purple weighed into this split as well?

I saw no purple actually. Amarama had a great and colorful dress. Felicks was in blue and everyone else was mostly in black. Of course, the rest of us all live in SF so that probably explains it.

I think purple is more relevant to discussions of the phrase "blessed be"

You know, I have to say that I was nearly driven into a fashion palsy by all the monotonous anarchist uniforms at that event. The sea of black hoodies and paint-splattered Ben Davis pants did give me the opportunity to be a giant sub-equatorial flower in comparison, however. Though later Felix reported that she noticed that some folks were so taken aback by my outfit that they were uncomfortable interacting with me.

Oh, and most of the people there were from the East Bay, incidentally. I have no link to back this up, but I'm fairly sure of it.

I love the masses in black attire here!! Sometimes it's ridiculously funny but then, you know, I look down at my outfit and have to stifle my smirky ass laughter.

I think that you've overly polarized your representation of the astrology conversation. I don't think any of us representing the non-Californians were real "believers." I don't even know what my fucking rising sign is. It's not our fault that we've had to assimilate. Plus it was a relief from all the flying innuendo.

And why didn't you play Celebrities? I bet you would have been really good at it. But it was nice Queso and you did the dishes. It was a massive relief to all of us who were there until the bitter end.

That's my point. what assimilation? We're from here and we have no use for it. go back to upstate NY with all that astrology hoo-haw. and don't get me started on the concept of "free will" astrology. That's really just astrological self-hate.

I might have played celebrities but I actually enjoy sneaking off to do dishes at potlucks. I have a seething hatred for coerced group "fun", but it did look ok.

I can't believe I forgot to mention how good your cake was.

1) You're such a bitch today.

2) You and your kind do not adequately represent "Californians."

3) It's Northern NY. Upstate implies some reference to NYC, which is not found where I'm from.

4) I know nothing about "free will" astrology, proving that you know more about astrology than me! You're a closet astrologer, aren't you, Gordon? You're clearly the one with the astrological self-hate problem.

5) My cakes can live without you.

So, how come you can't stand it when I harrass you, but you feel free to heap it on poor gordonzola? I'm sensing a double standard here.

Your cake can live on without him, but it won't live for long, because I will eat it.

I didn't want you to give me a hard time for ONE DAY when I had just had massive and scary bloodwork. Not the same. Plus Gordonzola asks for it.

I'm a native and I'm a believer. No assimilation required tho, I'm all about the difference loving, you know?

And free will astrology as in Rob Brezny? Rob rocks my world, man. Don't be putting him down.

I mean the concept that somehow the stars rule your life and personality, oh, but somehow they really don't. He is a subset of the larger ideological confusion. They're like astrology Unitarians or something.

A poem about my weekend visit

Date: 2003-12-01 11:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anandav.livejournal.com
Just came home from 4 days in the East bay
visiting my old haunts
Got nostalgic for the old days, the old ways.

Sucked on a fried chicken foot
the dim sum of my youth

but the rain kept pouring down

as I walked and walked
where the fisherman used to cuss
I could hear your voice

hey, I used to get high on that hill

but a strange thought occurred
as I passed yet another Starbuck's
when did it all become so

yuppified
dignified
homegenized

I half expected to see him
walk to me through
the fog

that groovy rebel
who breathed me in
and blew out the coolest
smoke circles

then I remembered.
He's dead.

No, lots of love for the bay.
However, the bay of my youth (circa 1970-1980)
is quite different!!
Next time I want to see you :)

well, you're only about two months older than me according to your bio. Which city/town did you grow up in?

In retrospect, I like long entries better. I get the short entries mixed up and forget which one I'm on.

Ugh, tell me about it. I was demo'ing slice and bake cookies, which I was making in a toaster oven. No sooner would I put out a batch than people would swoop down, grab them, and glare at me while running away because god forbid I was trying to TALK to them! If you're going to take my food, I get to talk to you! You've gotta earn that cookie, fucker!

Er, sorry.
