San Francisco A-Z (Part 1)

I'm compiling a list of things that I love about San Francisco. I decided not to wait until I finished because I could put it off forever trying to find a "Z" or something. When I'm done, maybe I'll compile it into a zine and give it to the Chamber of Commerce to distribute.

Enjoy:

A –- Angela "The Heart of San Francisco" Alioto My favorite politician ever. Daughter of an ex-mayor and absolutely nuts. Years ago at the Jewish Democratic Club endorsement meeting Roberta Achtenberg stood up and said, "As a Jew blah blah blah …" Angela stood up and interrupted with, "Well, I look Jewish!". In the last Mayoral election she stood up a press conference called to announce her endorsement of Gonzalez. Newsom thought he’d scored a coup, but when she endorsed him the next day she said it was because he’d promised her she would be Vice Mayor and Gonzalez wouldn’t which is technically illegal. Then, as the Newsom campaign was trying to fluff over his SF aristocratic background with stories of his single mother working two jobs, she announced that she’d be in charge of homeless issues for Mayor Newsom. "He’s Cash , I’m Care".

H -- Hunt’s Donuts. I lived across from the Hunt’s at 20th and Mission for two years. They had the best donuts in the world, especially if you hit them half drunk around midnight. Since they were "open 25 hours" this was usually no problem. They used to have plastic garbage cans filled with lard and you could watch them make the donuts through the window. If you didn’t mind being asked if you wanted to buy car batteries, stereos, or drugs while you watched.

Once an important, bustling, and crowded resource for San Francisco’s crime community,* they have fallen far in recent years. There was only one person inside the last time I went. She was reading a book about consumerism and looked like a New College student. It’s really sad. They don’t even make the donuts there anymore. And the jellys are not filled, but cut in half and spread with jelly. In fact, someone just told me that they got busted for stealing donuts from elsewhere and re-selling them a few years ago. Sad, sad, sad.

*I may have stolen that from Iggy Scam. I’m really not sure.

S -- Super Secret Sundial Where the hell is that thing, Ingelside? Heading towards the ocean you take a left on Ocean when you see the big church that looks like a mall. Then find your way to the middle of the circular streets. It’s a big fucking sundial in a cul-de-sac. I heard that it was once part of a race track that is no longer there. Being smack in the middle of the fog zone, I have visited it over ten times and only seen kinda vague readings. How do sundials adjust for daylight savings anyway?

Fucking YEAH!!!! Thanks! I am so excited. I need to make a special slide trip...

[identity profile] magpiesf.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
theres also a smaller, concrete, but still awesome slide off acme at 20th & douglass. my second favorite slide in the city, besides the esmeralda one.

were losing our quality swingsets too - you know, the tall metal pole ones like that one that used to be in what, mckinley sq (potrero hill) - theyre all getting replaced with readymade plastic playgrounds with much smaller swingsets. a travesty, i tell you!

I am sitting here trying to make a commen about the #$@$%%$@#@$%#@#$%^#%^$#%$^#$^% playground equipment $^#$%#%^&$%^&$&%^@$%@#$%#^$% but I'm too mad.

[identity profile] magpiesf.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. that pretty much covers it for me too. fine, so little children get their fingers pinched in the chains, and when they jump from swinging that high, they could really get hurt...

but these are Valuable Life Lessons(tm)! they build character!

[identity profile] slutbunwalla.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
swings are the bomb. I have laughed my ass off as an adult perfectly sober and alone swinging on a swing. the kids must have given me a wide berth...

[identity profile] magpiesf.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly. i think an increase in swingsets, quality, adult-friendly swingsets, would result in a corresponding increase in the mental heath of the population.

swingsets purge the mind of stress, boredom, depression and other manifestations of unwellness :) theyre great!

yeah and none of those rubber seats that squish your ass! metal or wood or even plastic...I think we need to start a movement.
Adult swings! That sounds kinda dirty actually...
;^)

I found it on sunday with my friends. It certainly is not a block long but it's fun esp if you put your jacket around your waist to slide on. Jeans are a little sticky. We went really fast and actually made this little girl cry bcse she was trying to imitate us as we launched ourselves off at the end. She landed right on her butt and started wailing, her Dad having to comfort her. We looked at each other and I said "well, I guess we've wreaked enough havoc here for one day..." and we skulked off. I felt really bad. But the slide was fun!
I love Bernal! Lucky you!

[identity profile] beer-retard.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I live near there and while the slide is pretty cool, it's not really a block long. Also, if you're wearing jeans or other non-slidey pants, I suggest bringing a piece of cardboard or something so you'll go faster.

If you keep going up after you hit the slide, the top of the Bernal hill is a cool place too. The views up there are almost as good as Tank Hill and it's not as cold and foggy.

[identity profile] slutbunwalla.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I love bernal!
There is some weird trick of the eye that makes the city itslef seem a lot closer than it actually is...
I used to live on the other side of that hill...
I really liked Wild Side West, thier gardens are so pretty. Actually I need to go back there too and get some back yard inspiration....

[identity profile] reddawn.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! How is it that none of you have taken me or even suggested going to the giant slide, even after I asked you guys about the giant whale things in Berkeley that you can supposedly slide down???

[identity profile] beer-retard.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! It isn't really a giant slide. It's a medium-sized slide at best. But the next time you come to SF, I promise I'll take you. We can combine that with a walk up the hill and a few beers at the lesbian/potsmokers bar with the magic garden. What an afternoon it will be!

[identity profile] reddawn.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! Totally!

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, I took you to Hunt's and the Sundial.* I would have taken you to Angela's but were not on speaking terms right now.

*oh wait, did I take you there, or my niece?

Dear Uncle Gordon,

[identity profile] reddawn.livejournal.com 2004-01-07 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! I know I'm younger than you, but confusing me with your 15 year-old niece? You're going to give me a complex about my age.

[identity profile] jette.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've totally slidden on that slide!

[identity profile] slutbunwalla.livejournal.com 2004-01-06 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
