I think they are needed too. At the same time, the 'hate crime' frame has sometimes been used to underplay (historically celebrated and ignored) violence committed in the name of 'love'. But I see this as another example of the 'turned on their heads' kind of thing you are talking about. In any case, these are interesting questions.
