anyone know how to address an e-mail to someone in the army? the e-mail I have written is firstname.middleinitial.lastname@us.army.mil but it's not working. the dots between names seem weird, but it didn't work without either.

I know someone on my friendslist knows the answer!

No one that I have written in the military has an email address that straighforward. One guy I was writing in Iraq had a Yahoo account. And then I have seen a fair number that are like: vulture12@irwin.army.mil

Irwin, being the base name.

One that I happened to see today was firstinitial.middleinitial.lastname@us.army.mil

first inital, hmmm. maybe I'll try that. It's the closest to what she gave me.

Yeah, you definitely need the base name, and probably some sort of unit designation. My father, for instance, is nickname.lastname@mwr.campbell.army.mil, and my brother is lastnamefirstinitial@emh.yokota.af.mil ... etc. If you know what base the person is stationed at, though, you can probably look up it up online and get all the stuff that goes after the @ sign, since I think that's your problem. Once you've got that, you can experiment with the first part.

yeah, it was unclear where exactly my friend was heading. she gave me what I wrote above and said it would get to her, but it bounced. I was hoping it would be standard and smple. Shouldn't the army be good for that?

I believe that the MO of the military is anything but standard and simple. the address that I have for my Coastie is, (if his name was john doe and he was on the good ship lollipop):' jdoe@lollipop.uscg.mil
hope that helps.

actually, I was. Though the base or no base thing seems overly confusing.

my boyfriend's is firstname.lastname@us.army.mil -- he's saying the first part (before the "@") can be pretty much whatever you want it to be

and he also says that if you tell him who you want, he'll look up the address for you!

Did the 'net shutdown for Iraq/Afghanistan troops get lifted? ISTR that they were tightening e-mail and web access rather severely for a while recently, following the photo release from Abu Ghraib.

I'm completely unhelpful. I have no idea. BUT, I want to see your friendster profile! I always forget how you're supposed to look people up. How does that work?

I am not friendstered. I think you misread "friendslist".

That is so embarrassing. I've just outed myself as a friendster enthusiast. heh heh.
