OK, time to stop fooling myself. I will be too busy to write anything beyond a sentence or two until the Bay Area Worker Coop Conference is over. I’ve already started canceling social plans because of the vast amounts of detail work involved right now. Feel free to visit the website and tell me how good the conference looks.

And since my last name is all over that site, I may as well give you all the link to the Bay Guardian interview with me that came out yesterday. I also may be on KPFA at an insanely early hour on Monday (Labor Day) morning but that’s not settled yet.

Looking forward to more leisure time somewhere in the future

Maggot cheese? I'm kind of glad I can't quite imagine that.

Maggot cheese?!

That would be enough to turn me into a vegan.

That maggot cheese! I remember reading about it before, I think in the NY Times. I kinda thought it was a urban legend.

I was trying to eat my lunch, which is plain yogurt with fresh peaches. Suddenly I'm not hungry anymore. I think the last time I was eating my lunch while reading the LJ, something your cheese co-worker said put me off my salad.

Clearly my time as an office worker is making me increasingly unfit for the real world.

"At the culture factories now, they make all sorts of culture recipes. They've made a lot of advancements in the technology of making cultures to order."

I will be quoting you in so many different contexts for years to come! It applies equally to cheese AND anthropology, how often can you say that about something.

By the way, nice poster. Though, I have to say, maybe its the typeset, but I read "WORKER COOPS" the wrong way the first time around. I was thinking like chicken wire and hay! And keeping workers penned up like that is probably anything BUT democracy in the workplace. Althoug, I've known a few co-workers who...

I love that Modesto arch, as well as the Redwood City one that says "Climate Best by Government Test." There must have been a fashion for those at some point in the history of California small-town boosterism... I imagine local Chambers of Commerce or Rotary chapters holding slogan contests, ribbon-cutting ceremonies with grip-and-grin photos for the local newspaper. Anybody wanna dissertation topic, cheap?

Actually I remember, when I used to work in an indie bookstore, we sold a book with lots of great photos of arches and stories about the heated competition between small towns to have the best arch. It's called Arch Rivals: Ninety Years of Welcome Arches in Small-Town America by Bernard C. Winn (ISBN: 0961516178). I think it's out of print but there seem to be a few used copies out there.

Also, there's a great story about how the slogan 'Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health' got on the Modesto Arch, but I don't want to take up too much of G's comment screen. I'll post it in my LJ today or tomorrow if you want to know more. I'll just say this...it involves a conspiracy by the town fathers to subvert the democratic will of the people!
