(what the fuck did they do to the update page? Help! Superchones! I need to update to OS X very soon!)

So, right after I sent a slew (slough?) of e-mails about my vacation, my dsl went down for two days. Let me acknowledge right now that I owe a ton of e-mail. Then the conference I was going to go to got cancelled. I have a week off in early October. What should I do?

*edited to add: I will probably end up going North like I planned anyway. But I will entertain other ideas.*

Ha. I had the exact thought half an hour ago when I opened up the update page. For your week off, why not do something you've always wanted to do but never got to do?

well, that's a deeper question than you know, Charm. I prefer traveling with people is part of the answer, the other is that I feel bereft of good ideas. and it's only a week but I don't just wanna hang around SF. Maybe I should visit the rest of the Bay Area!

I think you should grab [livejournal.com profile] twomartinis and find some crazy cheap nonstop flight here, for a fabulous Cambridge citybreak!

Because it's fresher's week*, and nothing says Cambridge like watching the kiddies fall down drunk in the afternoon.

And it's not that I'm against public drunkenness. I just think it should be a little quieter, kept out of the sunshine, and a lot more bitter.

October is my favorite month to visit friends on the east coast, especially now that I've spent ten years living in places without a real fall season.

I suppose we can't lure you back to the Midwest anytime soon, huh? Which is entirely too bad.

And on that topic, let me just say that your last journal entries made me blush like all-out crazy bright red, especially that asterisk. So um... thanks. You're welcome here any time, you know.

The leaves and light are gorgeous this time of year in New England, esp. in Provincetown.
There is always Los Angeles, though I may be biased!

If you do decide to stick around the Bay Area, here are a couple of ideas:

1. San Juan Bautista. It's the Mission where Kim Novak took that fatal header in "Vertigo," a pretty group of buildings on a pretty square in a pretty town. The town is home to El Teatro Campesino which is still going strong 40 years after Luis Valdez organized it as the cultural-propaganda wing of the Farmworkers Union. If you continue East to Hollister (site of the 1947 "Wild One" biker rally) and turn South on Highway 25, then East again on the New Idria Road, you'll find yourself in a very thinly populated, little-visited corner of Northern Cal, beautiful semi-chaparral landscape getting dryer as you near the Central Valley... there's a long-abandoned mercury mine at New Idria, a wildlife refuge, and practically nobody else around. And you can be back in San Juan for supper.

2. Tomales Bay--either the east shore (Marshall, basically) or the west (Inverness and Point Reyes.) Unlike Mendocino this is a really short drive so you can spend your vacation time relaxing instead of gripping the damn steering wheel. Beautiful country, good food (Manka's in Inverness), quiet.

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday I'll be at the store approximately 1030/11 to 6 or 7. Wednesday I'll schedule clients if I have them; that can be an hour or two, or up to four or five hours in the evening. Saturday I'll have off if things remain as per usual.
