Vacation in San Francisco
Jun. 19th, 2004 10:05 amI didn’t mention it, but last week I was on vacation. I was supposed to be at a 40th birthday party for a close friend, but she’s a big flake so even though I took time off and planned to leave the country, in the end I stayed home and hung out in San Francisco.
It was good. I needed a little break. Of course now that it’s nearing it’s end I wish it was longer, but that’s to be expected. I actually got a lot done, which was more byproduct than intention but still feels good.
Last Sunday it started on not such a great note. I missed a friend’s band because I ended up hanging out all day waiting for
reddawn. If only I’d had a cell phone! But then again, the Haight St. Fair is usually hateful so it was probably for the best. I later found out that my dad sulked around all day because he thought it was Father’s Day. He didn’t figure it out until he complained to my Brother in Law late at night and by then it was too late to get over it.
What else have I done?
-Saw three movies: "The Corporation", "Chronicles of Riddick", and "Saved". They were all fine in different ways, but none worth writing a review over. I missed the "Was Hitler Gay?" movie at the film fest because I forgot to see if I had the free pass in time.
-Read an entire manuscript about the history of co-ops in the US, made extensive notes, and discussed the organization of the book with the editor.
-Read three novels.
-Wrote my article on "Where would punk be without Reagan?" for MaximumRocknRoll. This will be my last unpaid piece for a big punk zine.
-Had dinner or drinks with many different friends.
-Went to a wedding and a going away party. (Actually, this is what I’m doing today)
-Ignored two meetings that I felt short-term guilt about not attending.
-Hosted an out of town guest.
-Cleaned the bathroom.
-Got a cell phone
-Went to the beach
-Bought new knives, a laundry basket, and a much needed storage container for my closet.
-Went through the last couple of boxes that I hadn’t dealt with from moving rooms. Finally hung stuff on my walls.
Still, I’m not ready to go back to work. But are we ever? Even though I like my job, living off vacation pay is a wonderful thing.
