Best/Worst of 2006 - Politics
Jan. 4th, 2007 08:38 am Best Protests
May 1 immigration rights protests throughout the nation. What happens next is unclear, but how nice to see people en masse rejecting bullshit claims by "leaders" to not skip work or school to make the most visible national protest in as long as I can remember.
Best SF Election news
Chris Daly’s re-election. I know people like to hate on him because of his expletive-ridden tirades and his over-competitive softball playing, but man, there’s a class war going on and Daly is one of the few elected officials on the right side of it. In a more just society, many, though not all, of the folks he yells at would be re-paying the society they’ve taken advantage of by cleaning the sewers or something. Besides, study your San Francisco history. Elected officials are supposed to be short-tempered Irish dudes. ;)

News anchor Pete Wilson calling Supe Bevan Dufty’s child a "travesty" because he had a baby with a non-romantic lesbian friend. Ahistorically equating romantic love with child rearing, Wilson won Dufty the election that day as San Franciscans in the Castro District were appalled.
Most Satisfying Event
Watching the Republicans lose. Don’t get me wrong. I am not Democrat. But how sad would it have been if after all the lies, the deaths in Iraq, the falling of the dollar, the domestic terrorism, Abu Graib, etc. if those fuckers won again. Let the new fuckers win one if only to see things like Santorum and Pombo at a momentary loss for words.
Biggest Myth that Might turn out to be True
That the Democrats gaining a majority will end the war. Both parties have an interest in the war of imperial conquest being fought over in Iraq. Though some Democrats may be sincere in wanting to end the war quickly, certainly the party as a whole isn’t going to do anything drastic like, you know, refusing to pay for it. After the Senate, aided by many Demos, approves the cost of the war through the end of the Bush Presidency, and especially if the "Surge" plan is approved, there will be more loss of troop morale, more desertion, more conscientious objectors and possibly the critical mass of desperation, self-preservation, and outrage necessary for the return of fragging. Those are the things that are the most effective in making imperial wars untenable in the long run, for good or ill.
