Basically, at some point he began to view himself as an entity that was actually in the band. The professional barrier slipped and he started to adopt certain hanger-on tendancies. He made references to going on tour with them and treating them in a long term capacity but didn't really consult any of them about that and just assumed that he was 'official'. He started putting up these little self motivating slogans while they were in rehearsal and it was irritating some of the band members. The irritated members told him that the slogans weren't working for them and actually kind of distracting but he kept pushing the issue.
When the band brought their growing discomfort up to him about the situation and let him know that their professional relationship would be ending when they went on tour and perhaps even sooner than that- he got insistant that they needed him and it was unwise of them. But it was in a 'but..but..I'm one of you guys' way and not in a rational, professional defense of keeping his job. They fired him (nicely) anyway.
