Grindhouse

Oh, in other movie news, I saw "Grindhouse" last night on the big screen. I really couldn't believe how bad the Tarantino movie was. I mean seriously. It's like he never watched one of those movies he's supposed to be inspired by. The dialogue:action ratio should not be 20:1, how can he not know that?

But I came back on here to say that I felt old being the only one in the theater who recognized the cover of "Too Drunk to Fuck" enough to laugh at it out loud. It underscores the dangers of ironic lyrics though. Nothing in that song, as heard in 2007, screams irony. Except for the "she bawls like the baby in Eraserhead" line, but that could easily be heard as some hot chick balling (not bawling) in a movie they never saw.

Does anyone know the song that played during the closing credits though? I really liked it, but couldn't tell from the credits what it was.

(I had a great time watching this with [livejournal.com profile] cindymonkey though! The Rodriguez film and the trailers were great.)

Is it the Nouvelle Vague version? Sorta chanteuse-y girl singing?

I don't know who covered it. but that sounds correct.

I love that version. I think I actually like the song better when the French chick sings it. Do I lose punker points for that?

oh hell no. Your Mother's Day entry earned you hella extra punker points anyway. Geez, can you think of a more lame DKs song? Oh wait, I totally can. Nevermind.

Can you think of a worse DKs song of that era is probably a better question. I always felt there was a reason that one didn't make it to an album.

Yes, it was the Nouvelle Vague version.

I was also the only one in the theatre who laughed at that.

thanks so much. that song is awesome.

The ending of Death Proof was indeed very good. but the lead up was so pointless. why, for example, do we need 10 minutes of debate about "ship masting"? and what happened to the friend. Did she blow the redneck? Kick his ass? Fall in love? What?

Oh, I like "Chick Habit," I've been hearing it on the radio.

It's one of the "new punk" songs that doesn't sound like little kids dressing up in their parents' clothes. That's probably just my judgemental old-lady ears and not their fault.

Anyway. "Chick Habit," good song!

my friend said of the tarantino: "It's like the Grindhouse version of My Dinner with Andre!"

which made me laugh aloud.

Bullshit, dude. Sounds like YOU have never seen a B-movie about cars. Hell, go rent Vanishing Point (mentioned by the characters in Death-Proof) and then come back and apologize to the WORLD for RUINING the Internet!

Planet Terror was all right, but it was in no way a B-movie. Maybe if it had one tenth the scale...

haha. you are right I've never seen Vanishing Point. But, I've seen every other movie referenced in that film. This was more boring than any of them.

and let's be honest, there was nothing really "B" about either of these movies. They had huge funding and the world at their feet. The Rodriguez film, to me, was an example of what a B movie director would have done if they had the money. If one is making a stylistic homage to a certain genre why ape the bad parts. With every line spoken I saw Tarantino sitting at his kitchen table in his underwear, chuckling at how clever he was.

I agree with your assessment of the dull pace of car movies (Two Lane Black Top comes to mind) but it seemed to me that Tarantino was also combining it with the genres of Chixploitation and slasher flicks, two genres that should NEVER have long dull spots.

I also complained about the dialogue:action ratio to Sherilyn after we saw the film (her first time, my second). She said that some grindhouse films used dialogue-heavy scenes to pad out the running time of films.

I wondered what happened to the girl they left behind as collateral as well, but figured that could be forgiven because I suspect it's a plot thread that an old school grindhouse film might drop as well once it had served its purpose of getting the other girls in the car and on the road.

For the most part, I loved Death Proof because that's how I spent my teenage years--racing down southern backroads in souped-up muscle cars doing stupid stunts and getting in fights.

It needed an editor, though. Jordan Ladd's character could've been cut entirely and as much as I love Eli Roth--and Lord knows I do--his character and that other dude were pretty much unnecessary.

But I would marry Zoe Bell in a heartbeat.

April March's French version of Chick Habit actually sounds sort of sucky. I don't know why.

The dialogue ratio WAS atrocious, however I liked seeing kurt russell or whoever it was getting the shit beaten out of him at the end. Payback for all the misogynist shit that goes totally unchecked in movies.

And do you mean Chick Habit by April March? I think that played during credits.

just so you know

I believe that Jasper is killed in Kill Bill Vol 1 by the bride after he pays buck to rape her...so it can be inferred here that after they are gone he rapes Lee...or maybe calls buck to rape her...I dunno.

I liked Death Proof. It was a whole lot of build up...and I was a little bored in the beginning...in fact I thought the whole austing sequence was really slow...but from the point that Zoey and Rosario showed up I was pretty good with the movie...plus there is that joke about Abby's last boyfriend being stolen by the girl that plays Daryl Hannah stunt double...who was in the first half of death proof...or something like that...it was funny, or I thought...
