2 general and 4 political Internet peeves

Hmmm, I guess it should make me happy that it's taken me this long to get to the point where I need to make an internet peeves post. I don't usually vent here, even if that's its primary use for many. Still. a little negativity always helps liven up a journal. If you think these are about you in particular, they're not. Or more accurately, they may be about you a little, but if it was just you I'd find it an adorable quirk and be amused by it.

Here goes:

1. Blogs without rss feeds. I haven't seen a layout yet that was so nice I didn't prefer to read on my friendslist or aggregate page.

2. Whining about LJ cuts. I cut pictures if I want to make them big, and linked articles. I would cut spoilers if I wrote about spoilery topics. Ditto with NSFW images and text. But for anything else I don't understand it. I'm on your FL because I wanna read you. If you think my posts are too long, unfriend me or put me on a long-winded filter.

Not cutting something that screws up my friendspage formatting is inexcusable though.

3. Equating air travel restrictions as a harbinger of the coming fascist state. I'm not talking no-fly lists, racial profiling, or specific Patriot act travesties which do merit that discussion. I mean like all the hoo-haw about the cops pulling their guns on that girl they thought was carrying a bomb. Some on the internet seem to think that since she was an MIT student (and MIT students "don't do mornings" well)* that this just shows how bad things have gotten

Whatever. I think the attention that long security lines and new restrictions get just shows the class nature of air travel (and the internet). Most of these people don't comment or post on their LJs when the cops pull guns on or kill inner city kids. In fact, pulling guns on urban youth just isn't news. But man, a kid going to one of the US's most elite schools bringing something that could certainly, at a fast glance, look like some kind of bomb. How dare they question her?

(Anyone who also writes about the post-Columbine loss of "free speech" in the schools or other issues mentioned above is exempt from this peeve.)

4. Speaking of free speech, anyone who reaffirms another persons "right to say what they want" during an internet argument. Next time I'm gonna say, "Thank you. An you have a right to bear arms in a well-regulated militia."

5. Using the never-actually-said-or-written Emma Goldman "quote", "If I can't dance, it's not my revolution" for justification of one's own political inaction. Since there's no real quote, there's only context. That context is of an theorist, lecturer, and anarchist who sacrificed most things in her life to build a revolution that never happened, finally dying in exile. The quote is about the need to enjoy oneself in the small percentage of her life when she wasn't actively involved in The Struggle. Not about, "If it's not fun, I won't do it."

6.Lack of attention to labor issues amongst people who blog about other political issues. On my FL only one person mentioned the UAW strike today. I don't think anyone mentioned the local garbage lockout even though it went on for a couple of weeks and impacted large parts of Oakland. And hey, the SEIU security guards in San Francisco just went out too. Yet, personality-driven "political" arguments affecting very few people will travel from journal to journal and be discussed for days. Well, those are more fun, it's true.

I'm sure there are more, but I've run out of steam. I'm sure you have your own. Geez, I didn't even mention Randists engaging in discussions as if that was a valid philosophy. I think that's a good sign.

Oh wait, I know how to end this

[Poll #1060960]

*It's "think pieces" like this that made Chumbawamba write the song "Ulrike" (Holy crap! I didn't realize that Shhh! And Slap are out on one CD called "Shhhlap!". I just bought it. Two of the '90s best records available again!)

[identity profile] mistersmearcase.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
ipod commercial with dancers in colorful costumes? It's Feist's "1234." I. Am. Completely. Obsessed. Can't get it out of my brain, but I like the song so mostly I don't mind.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's it! I'm liking that song more with every listen. I really like her voice.

I haven't looked, but I would bet $ that you wanted more bile next time.

[identity profile] gwenzilla.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Your post is too long, you need to put all of it behind an lj-cut. I whined at Chad about how there was no UAW coverage on the news last night, does that count? I will not be buying any new cars until it's over. D is regularly disheartened that she is the only one who speaks out against injustices in the classroom, though it seems to be more a function of student apathy than district policy. We can discuss whether this apathy is part of a larger conspiracy, if you'd like. You do have that right.

Fritzi does not conform to silly man's idea of formatting.

someone needs to tell that MIT girl (or her defenders anyway) that art is not cool unless it gets you arrested anyway.

I like "you have the right to bear arms" too.

in conclusion, more hate please. I was just relieved nothing was directly about me.

[identity profile] serazin.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Rant on G! All excellent peeve choices!

Related, I just heard about the security guards on KPFA yesterday. Sometimes I'm impressed with how right the SEIU gets stuff. I'm soooo not an expert on labor issues, and I'm positive that there's lots to critique about SEIU, but I'm also so glad that security guards are organizing and that the SEIU is spearheading that.

Also, I couldn't answer your poll because I needed to check multiple boxes.

You get wet sloppy kisses from me for #5. (Don't worry, though, they won't be fun. Or lead to dancing.)

I'm angry about #6, though, because I was GOING to say something about it (was talking to C. this morning) and now I CAN'T, because if I do it will look like I'm only doing it because you told me to. Damn you.

how timely

Because yesterday I ended up on an old post of yours inviting readers to share the things they hate. In that spirit, I give you the following LJ actions that make me go from zero to spiteful and petty in a matter of milliseconds:

*people who make friends-list cuts and then publically announce that "it's nothing personal"

*people who friend me without at least saying hi

*people who say and write "people THAT" instead of "people WHO" (this should actually be at the top of the list. it is the language usage error that makes me foam like a hydrophobic, serrated-fanged dog)

*THE TURN-SIGNAL IMPAIRED. I CAN SMELL YOU OVER THE INTERNETS.

Love,

#3 - I agree.

I've actually been in a similar situation. When I was flying out of Iowa City, airport security totally freaked out about the "Heatwave" (R) stripes on my messenger bag (the front of the bag lights up so that cars can actually see you at night).

When I flew down to Iowa, the folks at the Twin Cities International Airport didn't bat an eye. But coming home from Cedar Rapids, they ran my bag through the x-ray machine, and the Transit Security Authorities started yelling:

"What the hell is that?!" (pointing at the battery pack that was permanently wired to the side of the bag) "Oh my god, DON'T TOUCH IT!!!"

No one wanted to try flipping-on the light, so I had to... very... calmly... try to explain to them that Heatwave (R) technology is a standard feature on L.L. Bean messenger bags, and I'd be happy to wait for them if they wanted to confirm it on the L.L.Bean website.

Kind of of annoying, but really, it only cost me an extra five minutes in airport security line. I think the small town TSA were more bummed-out than I was -I had just ruined their chance to play the hero on the 6:00 news.

The MIT student on the other hand... I can see how that might be mistaken for a bomb. Should she go to prison? No. But the indignation with which people are greeting the arrest of an elite college student really tells you something.

# 6 - I've been wanting to post something about the AFSCME strike, but since the primary breadwinner in our household works for the University, it would not be prudent.

[identity profile] sadie-sabot.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If I can't do whatever the fuck i want, when i want, with total, unconditional support from YOU and everyone else, it's not my revolution, it's facism. And if I can't spell facism however I want to, it's not my revolution, either.

dude, i didn't know about either of these strikes. i've been all caught up in the land of the unhappy kindergarterner (who would say that if she can't be homeskooled, it's not HER revolution). Which tells me that noone on my F-list blogged about it *(until now) or maybe I have just been in a sleep deprived fog, thanks for bringing to my attention!

and I like crankiness, usually, except when I caused it and am in the wrong (when i do something right that makes people cranky, well, then it IS my revolution! LOL)

[identity profile] afellowwaitress.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, both with regards to the kindergarten revolution and the lack of attention to the strikes. thanks, Gordon.

Now that you mention peeves

[identity profile] jactitation.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm cranky about the way people misuse "impact" as a verb. As a noun, it is pretty much synonymous with "effect." But as a verb, it means compress, not affect. The people of Oakland weren't particularly squished by the garbage workers strike (and the folks in the well-off areas weren't really even affected anyway).

And what about travel restrictions as the latest development in class warfare? Have you seen how you can pay a yearly supplement, submit to a personal investigation, and have your security waived?

Re: Now that you mention peeves

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)

whatever. I know you're only here for the cheese.

and yeah, I was just reading about how they are starting the class warfare service in the Bay Area.

[identity profile] seriesfinale.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Your rants aren't nearly as cranky as half my FL, you're right at a happy medium.

I generally don't touch politics with a ten foot pole (or much of anything with substance) on my LJ, but I work for a union and have been watching the UAW and local SEIU strikes very closely. Labor unions really bring out the bile in normally left-leaning people--I got into a bit of a comments section tiff with an LJ friend about the Oakland lockout earlier this year.

[identity profile] smallstages.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Internet peeves. Something about getting the unqualified comment, "Great post!" rubs me the wrong way.

It reminds me of the empty-calorie comments I start leaving on student papers around 1am when I'm totally skimming. They're tweezing out the subtleties of dominance and destruction in Palestine, their tears and anxiety sweat wrinkling the page, indicating a high level of critical thinking and personal involvement, and I'm all, "Interesting!" Check. A-. Next.

Also, I told you that was Feist the last time you asked, and you looked at me like I had a hole in my head where answers about singers on iPod commercials should live. Dude.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You did tell me. I forgot her name! What do I know of Feist? I was looking at you like that because I was all, "Feist? That can't be right. It's like making "feisty" into a verb."

Yay for the hate. Somehow no one on my friends list posted about the MIT student (as far as I could tell--I've been kinda skimming), and I was pretty relieved. I came across the story elsewhere, and was like, big deal.

I super agree with 4. Also the misuse of the word censorship to all sorts of situations.

Also, I wish more people would post about labor issues! I come across some of it in my news readings, but because my work focuses on other areas, I'm often too uninformed. These days, I get most of my news from my Super Labor Law student in my class. But that's usually about new legal things, not new activist things.

[identity profile] 7leaguebootdisk.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
When the SEIU apologizes for waking my wife up at 6am with a bull horn after her C-section, I will consider their arguments on their merits.

Yup, back in 2001 they did a once a month strike at Cal Pacific, and were out there with a bull horn (now, since their group was small enough for voice to work, and since the people driving by in the morning commute all had their windows up, the point of the bull horn was to fuck with patients in the hospital, and people in apartments across the street. Nice fucking people the SEIU, really know how to work up people's sympathy).

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
well, you can go through life one of two ways. You can take an isolated incident and hold onto in and build action (or inaction) around it. Or you can think, "What's best for the community and for most people?" and act accordingly. SEIU workers getting better contracts, and Cal Pacific not being able to cut staff like they wanted, is certainly better for everyone in the long run.

but I'm sorry that happened to your wife. I mean, not that I was holding a bullhorn or anything.
