No on 8

Ok, so marriage isn’t my big issue. But Californians have a pretty fucking historic chance to ratify the rights of homos to marry on November 3. Seriously, did any of you around my age think that this would happen in our lifetimes? Gays and lesbians being treated equally under the law in this way? I sure didn’t.

I’ll go back to being a purist on Nov. 4. But the idea of the right wing taking these rights away after months of marriages taking place is too much to bear. I donated to the No on 8 cause and you should too. Obama doesn’t need your money.* The right has given up on McCain and putting their money here in California to pass this measure.

Of course marriage of any kind is historically based on the idea of women as property and ensure the flow of wealth smoothly through the aristocracy. Of course everyone should have health care when they need it and not have to marry for it. Of course this can set up a division between good (married) gays and bad (non-monogamous) queers. But what the fuck? Picture losing to those right wing assholes on Election Day. We need to crush their spirit.

Here’s a direct donation link

*Of course, No on 6 isn’t a bad place to put it either. Plus No on 4 (every damn election we have to say no to this!) And don’t forget Yes on VV in Oakland and Yes on K and R** in SF.
** I cannot believe the Greens take themselves so seriously that they refused to endorse the naming of the sewage plant for George Bush. Talk about illusions of grandeur. San Franciscans, do your duty! Greens, remain irrelevant!

i just have to say that i am so tired of the yes on 8 ads telling me i need to fear that my kids will be taught about the gay in school. i really would like to respond to them and tell them my kids already know about and support gay marriage.
*but* i bet that ad works on a lot of parents.

don't you care that your children will be told that princes have to marry princes and shown gay pr0n in kindergarten?

"This commercial I found tells me that, without same sex marriage, children will be condemned to dark, drab kitchens with mothers who only come to their level to communicate when they want to impose restrictive religious guidelines.

Screw that! Californians, vote no on 8! Preserve innocence, let children believe (for a little bit longer) that marriage is about princesses (and/or princes) living happily ever after with someone they love." - [livejournal.com profile] blue_estro

It's almost enough to make you hope it's a really stinky sewage plant!

Don't hate, No on 8!

As a child of divorce, I have always been on the side of "banning marriage (period, full stop)".

Of course, that position doesn't poll well, along with my other political proclivities:

War is over, if you want it.
Divest from war.
Stop the corn welfare military food industrial complex.
Tax religion.
Erase god (from government).

And a couple extra..
Change "Star Spangled Banner" to (pick one: "California Uber Alles", "I will survive (deep house remix)", "I Wanna Conquer the World" or "Surprise, Surprise (the Government Lies)")

Anyone incensed or amused by this comment must pay a toll before responding to me here: http://www.noonprop8.com/action/donate

Cheers, Queers!

Dude, my workplace is called Rainbow. How soul-killing is that for a punk rocker?

I did propose at one point that we change the name to "Rainbows and Unicorns".

Then every day we could remind our community why he is one of the most evil men in San Francisco history. Great idea!

I oppose the naming of the sewage treatment plant after George W Bush.

Sewage treatment plants are useful to their communities, good for the environment, and actually make things less shitty. How exactly does that bring Bush to mind.

Now, if there was a toxic waste dump that needed renaming...

maybe if they just named the inflow pipe for him...

well, of course. But that's the literal meaning, not the symbolic one. If I worked at that plant I'd think it was hilarious.

Actually, speaking as an anthropologist (which means that I get to stand at the front of the room and draw diagrams with circles and triangles and sound just a whit pedantic while feeling irrationally proud that Obama's mother was one of us), I don't think that marriage has been based "the idea of women as property and the flow of wealth smoothly through the aristocracy" except in particular historic periods in particular places. More generally, it has been about alliances between kin groups, sometimes understood as groups of men, but by no means always so understood, Levi-Strauss notwithstanding. Its meaning and so on varies both cross-culturally and transhistorically, and can't really be reduced to a property relation.

That said... go California! No on 8! And all that! Also, yay W sewage plant!

I would certainly argue that that property is its most important function since the advent of capitalism. All such institutions have other functions, meanings and attachments, but this is why it's an institution of the state as opposed to an agreement between kin groups.

Ah, well, if we're just talking about under capitalism and the state, then sure...

well, it is our present reality in California 2008. I didn't mean to get your anthro back up. ;)

Greens, remain irrelevant!

This made me laugh and laugh and laugh.

Also, thanks for speaking out for my little East Bay measure! But also you have to put a space in Measure V V or else it looks like Measure W, please. We have learned this the hard way!

Measure V V information here in case anyone reading this cares about, you know, poor people and people of color in the East Bay. :)

ha. well, it's not like endorsing the measure would have made them relevant. It's just that if you're an 3rd party political organization, you may as well have some fun and try to capture people's imagination.

and no on 4! the perennial parental notification measure that always just barely fails. they're saying it looks like it'll just barely pass this time.

oh yes, I don't know how I forgot that one. I will edit.

I am really tired of voting on that issue.

maybe we need to get a ballot measure amending the constitution for NO PARENTAL NOTIFICATION EVER. tho i'm sure that would go over like a lead brick...
