A question for the Americans

What cheese did you buy for Thanksgiving or No Thanks to Genocide Day celebrations/commemorations?

(Anonymous) 2006-11-25 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Brillat-savarin, cotswold, buttermilk blue.

Can you answer a cheese question for me?

Are there any veined cheeses that are safe for people with gluten allergies?

[identity profile] sophistimicated.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
None!

I did, however, have a long and tipsy conversation the day before Thanksgiving with a similarly drunken basque in front of the cheese section of our sad local "independent" grocery. Then I wandered away and bought granola & petite verdot.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I ate a lot of Basque cheese. We sold about 250 lbs of Basque sheep cheese on the day and a half before t-giving.

Sorry. I forgot to log in.

People with diagnosed gluten allergies should avoid all blue cheese.

[identity profile] rhiannonstone.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Gruyere for the gougeres, Pt. Reyes blue for the stuffed endive leaves, and St. Agur, Parrano, Petit Basque, and Mt. Tam for snacking.

Just plain goat cheese. Made faux-bruschetta appetizers with baguette, goat cheese, walnuts and honey, toasted.

some la tour(sp?), some drunken goat, and then some generic brie we defiled with really yummy strawberry goop and candied walnuts.

so, in other words, creamy and not challenging cheeses. easy eats.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
La Tur is awesome. We we handing out samples in the last hours we were open and people were going nuts.

For snacking, while cooking stuff for the actual dinner, some kind of gouda with mustard seeds in it.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
that'll do.

[identity profile] tuliphead.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
a better question would be, what cheese didn't i buy?

aged ewephoria, l'etivaz gruyere, st. agur, basque pilota, italian tortambros, spanish drunken goat, italian tre latti (sp?), and the organic sierra nevada cream cheese.

they all made excellent leftover turkey sammich cheeses! yummmm. thanks for your help!

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I loaded you up. That Tenerone Tre Latti is expensive but awesome

Petit Basque and this insanely creamy gorgonzola that spread like soft butter. Sorry, I don't recall the name.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
ha.

I put out a big cheese plate with:

leyden with caraway
havarti with dill
french yogurt cheese with tomato and basil
cotswold
an aged grueyre that i forget the name of
prima donna
an aged gouda that i don't know how to spell, beemstersomething?
kasseri
proscuitto and provolone roll

and a few kinds of crackers. Yum! Prima Donna, Cotswold and kasseri are my favorite cheeses of all time, too, so it was tasty happiness.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You should try the Saenkanter someday if you like aged goudas.

proscuitto yum.

It wasn't for a celebration (other than the celebration of sitting at home and eating delicious cheese with a housemate) or anti-celebration, but here is what I bought on Thursday and have been eating since:

- Lincolnshire Poacher
- 10-year aged Gouda
- Abbaye de Belloc
- Humboldt Fog

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are some fine, and expensive, choices.

there was in fact - and sadly - no cheese at our gathering...
oh! except a blue cheese dip for the chopped vegs. (and that was just the fancy chunky blue cheese salad dressing from a certain co-op)

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
that's a damn good dressing. at least there was booze.

some of that low-fat shredded cheese from TJ's. (how cheese-snobby of us!)

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about the TJ's part but low fat yuck!

[identity profile] lizsybarite.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Some kinda herbed chevre from Trader Joe's - we mixed it with greens, avocado, dried cranberries and walnuts. Easy & yum.

[identity profile] pantryslut.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't. I hang my head.

[identity profile] 19-crows.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Cheese was not a part of our holiday repast.

Oh wait, there was some kind of spread that might have had cheese, but I didn't have any.

[identity profile] jenlight.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I never buy food for thanksgiving. Not because I am morally opposed to it or anything, but because my mother cooks no ifs ands or buts.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it would be that way for me if I didn't work in food. rather it would be the pretense of that since it is a non-discussed thing that my mom isn't the best cook and she buys a lot of the stuff these days at the local gourmet deli. shhhhh.

[identity profile] und1sk0.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
i didn't, i was under the false impression that someone was going to be bringing over the cheese board (cough, le tarte, ahem)..

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
oooooooh. I will totally give her crap tonight when she gets here for the late receiving shift.

Pleasant Ridge Reserve, which is made by these guys http://www.uplandscheese.com/ in the great state of Wisconsin. It's simply fantastic. I also bought an 8oz wheel of French Camembert, but can't remember the maker.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's a great cheese. A harder sell in California because the price is even more and it's not local, but an awesome cheese.

[identity profile] playswithfood.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Two cheeses, actually.

Coeur de Rollot and a basil and pistachio torte. Mmmmm!!

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
nice!

[identity profile] culturalvacuum.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Fresh, horseradish-watercress goat cheese from a Pennsylvania dairy (http://agmap.psu.edu/Businesses/1486), purchased at the nearby farmers market.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2006-11-26 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
you know,I don't know them, but Hendrickson Dairy make some awesome cheeses. They're somwhere in PA.
