California voters: get ready for JUNE
Feb. 13th, 2008 01:25 pmAlright California voters, this is super important for those of us in San Francisco and a few other places. Evil now has a number. Vote against Prop 98 on the June ballot. Yep, the June ballot. Prop 98 is being touted as "eminent domain reform" but is really an attack on rent control. It also gets rid of a number of environmental protections so many environmental groups, as well as AARP and the League of Women Voters have already signed on to oppose this proposition.
(Prop 99 is the tenant-sponsored measure to reform eminent domain and save rent control but I haven't had a chance to read up on that one yet. I will probably support it, but want to read the small print first.)

Campaign Begins Saturday, February 16 With Voter Registration Mobilization
Key to victory in June will be ensuring that renters are registered and renters vote. June is typically a low turnout election–which is why landlords chose this election–so we need to work extra harder to get tenants to the polls. The campaign begins in earnest Saturday, February 16, with a voter registration mobilization. We'll be meeting at 10 AM at the San Francisco Tenants Union, 558 Capp St. (in the Mission at 21st St). We'll meet and then go set up tables at key intersections or door to door (both to register voters and to get current renter voters signed up as absentee voters). Lots of volunteers will be needed, so try to come!
Progressive Reading Series Save Rent Control Fundraiser Sat., Feb. 16, 7 PM, Makeout Room
On Saturday, February 16, the Progressive Reading Series will hold a fundraiser for the Save Rent Control Campaign. Readers include Vendela Vida, author of the acclaimed Let The Northern Lights Erase Your Name. All funds from the February 16 reading will be going to efforts to save rent control in San Francisco. Didn't know that was an issue? Well, that's exactly the problem. On June 3 there will be an initiative on the ballot disguised as a proposition for eminent domain reform. Hidden inside this bill is a ban on all rent control in the state of California. The people behind Proposition 98, aka "the hidden agenda bill" are a particularly evil group of developers and big property owners along with the malicious Howard Jarvis Taxpayer's Association. If this proposition passes it will effect 350,000 residents in San Francisco. The time to start raising awareness is now. With that in mind we'll be making t-shirts, buttons, posters, etc. I'm advancing the money myself and paying myself back out of the door take.
EVERYBODY ATTENDING FEBRUARY 16 GETS A T-SHIRT!
For advance tickets please < paypal $20 per person to "tribe AT stephenelliott.com". Or you can pay at the door, $10 to $20 sliding scale. But we always recommend getting tickets in advance because we often sell out (especially with this month's incredible lineup) and it makes it easier for us so people with advance tickets are let in first.
