Instead of watching the Academy Awards I met up with [livejournal.com profile] defenestr8r in the Haight. Even though it’s a 15 minute walk to upper Haight, I go there maybe once a year if you don’t count the occasional trip to the anarchist book store to drop off zines. It seemed kind of mellow and not so annoying Sunday. Maybe the war had put the usual jerks who hang out there in a contemplative mood.

Luckily, we did have one reminder of the true nature of the Haight, San Francisco’s playground for the obnoxious. At the bar, where everyone huddled around the TV showing the Warriors game instead of the one showing the Oscars, a couple of khakied slummers started getting loud and boisterous. We couldn’t really see them from our table, but we could hear the whooping and dude-ing.

Evidently they were asked to leave. When they got outside they became even louder. In declaration of their drunkenness and outrage at their mistreatment, one of the boys started violently humping the Jerry Garcia memorial, pulling it part way out of the ground while smacking the picture of Jerry on the head. He them ran off into the middle of the street, waving his arms and yelling into a cell phone. I wish I could report on what he was saying but I couldn’t make out a coherent word in the entire incident.

I’m just glad someone was there to represent in this time of crisis.

ah, you were probably just trying to get a look at Adrien Brody and not paying attention to the Jerry humper.

Anyone who topples a statue of Jerry Garcia can't be all bad...

There's a Gulf War analogy in here somewhere, I can smell it.

I have a dream. That someday an army of punks, ravers and hip-hoppers will roam through the Haight driving out the hippies while a joyful populace rejoices and throw their tie dyes, dijeridoos, patchouli, hackey sacks, Dead albums and hemp clothing into the pyres of freedom we light in the street.

(I know this is not an analogy)

and how can we make this dream a reality?

Well, you got me picturing a Haight full of soviet realist-style Jerry statues and that is a scary image. but no, this was a large, laminated color picture stuck into the ground with candles, flowers and offerings.

But your thesis is correct. If he wasn't too drunk to know who he was humping.

hmmm

Something about San Francisco I don't miss. However, on any given day, you can see the same behaviour go down in any "centrum" bar, where brit boy tourists watch soccer (or whaveter) and drink a pint or 10.
