So who'd you guys vote for for Mayor?

I saw Tom Ammiano on 16th St last night with a small crowd of supporters. I already knew I was gonna vote for him, but it was nice to tell him that in person. Weirdly, I ran into my high school friend, [livejournal.com profile] ctrhotpink right then and we were loudly discussing not voting for our high school classmate, The Front-Runner, which confused the Tom-boys and Tom-girls because I think they misinterpreted our conversation as one of support for Gavin.

He was voted "Most GQ" in high school, btw.

The whole Matt Gonzalez thing seemed like he was just getting his name out there for the 2007 Mayoral race against Newsom after Newsom wins this election. I was kinda shocked how fast people jumped ship on Tom. A neighbor even asked me when Matt got into the race if I was gonna replace my Ammiano sign. Could the Left be more fickle? Is it just cuz Gonzalez isn't queenie?

I actually don't think it's just that. I think Ammiano has been unable to move the left agenda forward after his exciting write-in race for Mayor and his subsequent crushing defeat by Willie Brown. There are good reasons to support Gonzalez. I'll definitely vote for him in 2007.

As for "The Heart of San Francisco", she'd be my 3rd choice if only because she's crazy enough to do practically anything. Susan Leal? Better than Gavin.

Matt's a HOTTIE. That is why. He appeals to all the Earnest Young Ladies. I'm voting for his hair.

Plus I can't remember exactly why right now, but Tommie the Commie has pissed me off a couple of times in the past.

Angela is a hoot, I almost want to vote for her instead, for the entertainment value. Susan Leal was super hot 5 years ago or so, but now she looks like the frump truck ran her over. How can she manage the city if she can't manage her look?

I don't see at all how Newsom appeals to minorities.

? Neither do I. But did you see the "minority face" door hanger? With the photo of a pretty, Marina-type Black girl illustrating a pull-quote about how much Gavin cares about "her community?" My husband grabbed it, put it over his face, and said, "Look, I am Gavin, and I am down with the brothers!"

"Matt's a HOTTIE. That is why. He appeals to all the Earnest Young Ladies. I'm voting for his hair."

Greasy and parted in the middle?! Eeewwww. It's as objectionable as Gavin's stiff quiff, for all sorts of different reasons.

Actually, what a great idea for a reality show~~ make all candidates submit to a makeover. I woulda watched that.

Let's face it, after Jordan's performance in the shower, I think we can agree that dignity is *not* part of the mayoral race in SF.

yeah, I saw a new issue of the "Argonaut" on the street last night. That's Warren Hinckle's hit piece paper that actually ran the full length Jordan photo the day before the election that year (which I still have somewhere). nothing so good this time. what a disappointment. I was hoping for Gavin doing coke or Matt picking up chicks.

Matt's not hot because of his hair Matt's hot because he's a green and just got into the run off with the big bad evil Newscum. Well, ok I guess the fact that he's a green sort of makes me think he maybe is hot as well. If he wasn't a green running for mayor that sometimes hangs out with artists would he still be hot? These are the important issues to question.

1. I'd like to keep living in my rent-controlled apartment.

2. I'm not a purist.

3. Voting's ok as long as one realizes it's one of the least effective long-term forms of political action. I think it's rather silly to avoid voting in a city that makes it so incredibly easy (because of the number of polling places) because of an abstract theoretical belief. Encouraging people not to vote seems to me to be a waste of time and effort. Encouraging people to remember that elected officials don't really represent them as they vote for the least offensive one seems more pragmatic.

Also, Democrats have a wider range of politics here than in most places. All the serious candidates in the Mayors race, including my high school buddy, are Democarts except Gonzalez who's a Green. You can't get elected in a city-wide election as a Republican. Hell, Nader beat Bush here and it wasn't close.

wait, did you post this just to goad ME? because i'm easily sucked into stupid debates on this topic. my argument can be boiled down to 3 points:

1. voting does not delay the advent of an anarchist society based on mutal aid etc.. - as far as i can tell - it has no impact on the possibility of that society.

2. elections, PARTICULARLY local ones, have a huge impact on the daily lives of a lot of people - often the most marginalized people in a given community. the state innitiatives are a good example - as are mayoral races. the passage or failure of prop 187 probably had little impact on an eventual anarchosydichalist society - but a huge impact on the laotian kids at my local elementary school.

i've forgotten my 3rd point. 2 is enough.

wait, i took a breath (and checked your lj) and noted that your actual question is around voting for a democrat - not voting in general. here's my new argument:

in the last oakland mayoral race, this guy named Wilson Riles challenged Jerry 'i'm an opportunist former liberal, now "centrist" trying to get a reputation so i can run for president again - not that i could ever win' Brown.

Wilson Riles is genuinely progressive. He's been working on Oakland and California politics - specifically around education - for years. I could be wrong, but i believe he's originally from oakland and is obviously personally invested in the city. He's also Black - and Oakland's population has a Black majority. Black activists fought long and hard to get a black mayor - but we only had 2 before Jerry Brown came to town.

anyhow, Jerry Brown won the last election and Wilson Riles lost. During his tenure as mayor, Jerry Brown has
- invited the Navy and Marines to conduct war games in Oakland
- spearheaded the opening of a 'military academy'
- wrote a winning ballot measure to get 100 more cops on the streets
- gained a reputation for being totally unresponsive to community groups
- other bad stuff i can't remember

i can't guarentee that had Riles won, Oakland would now be a workers paradise, but i feel confident that he would have made somewhat different policy decisions that could have had much less negative impact on the daily lives of Oaklanders.

If I were still in SF, I would probably vote for Gonzalez b/c he's the first guy I've liked *as a politician* for years. Tom's nice, but you want to go drinking with him, not have him run the city. He makes a good political gadfly, though.

I'm very amused to learn that you went to school with Gavin. I'm going to call him by his first name as a sign of disrespect. "Most GQ" -- I believe it!

Here's the split laid out as far as I understand it.

Mattheads:
"Class is the only issue"
"He's a hottie"
"He's a newcomer and therefore has a fresh vision"
"He doesn't talk with a lisping complainy manner"

Tom:
"Sexual orientation, gender, and race matter as much as class"
"He's been our defender and champion, with excellent legislations, for 20 years"
"Having a gay mayor makes a statement to the world about valuing the contributions of queer people"
"He's built up good working relationships with everyone in city hall already"

And I can't resist this breakdown---

Women who are for Matt:
1)think he's cute
2)have a tendency to date self-absorbed jerks

Women who are for Tom:
1)hardcore feminists
2)more dykes than I've ever seen on any campaign

Women who are for Angela:
1)women of color
2)professionals who find Newsom too brainless

I jumped ship....

...because I don't think Tom's ship is able to win the race.

I feel like the Tom's old tug has lost a lot of momentum and does not stack up well against the SS Nuisance, we saw what the HMS Willie did to him back when he had a full head of steam. However Matt's rig is untested and the outcome is less certain, less certain to find itself at the bottom of the bay.
