Typos really catch on, sometimes picking up a different or "more fun" connotation than the original. "Teh", "pron", and "newsfroup" are pretty well-known, eh.

i've always assumed it's a way to get around basic content-blocking software. "porn" is likely to be a keyword that triggers blocking, while "pron" or especially "pr0n" is not. well, until such usage becomes common and included in the keywords to block out. --in general, that's why a lot of spam does stupid spellings and use of typographic characters--that gets around any software that automatically blocks email with things like "porn" "penis" "farm animals" "pyramid scheme" and the like in the subject line.

Wow. I had completely forgotten about content blocking software. I was under the assumption that the word pr0n was used in order to avoid being spidered into porn search results in the same way some people use AT and DOT COM in order to avoid being found by e-mail spam spiders.

Also, web and mail proxy servers for some companies search outgoing net traffic, and obviously, "porn" sends up red flags. So when surfing at work, typing "pron" or "p0rn" sometimes will get past big brother. The same reason you get spam not selling "Viagra" but "\/iag.ra" because otherwise it would be bounced.

I'm not insinuating that you need viagra, though. :)

Why people do it serious is probably what the others say. But I think h@c|<3RZ write pr0n because they think it's funny. I think they also do that numbers letters thing to make it look like C0D3 or something like that. But my favorite things is the plethora of exclamation points with the numbers at the end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@11 It always cracks me up when certain people do that. It's this joke of being so excited and spazzing out that your fingers slip on the shift key. I think some of that hacker humor is really funny!!!!!!1 Maybe I'm nerdy. I especially like the jokes when they trick people into deleting their hard drive. I think pr0n as a joke is lame though. I've also seen people write int0rnet, and I've taken to pronouncing "internet" that way.

I actually don't know anything about computers myself.

well, there's "American" soy "cheese" but otherwise no. I have a beautiful "History of Cheese" pamphlet put out by Kraft which traces every incarnation of cheese as a progression to the pinnacle. Yes, beyond feta, beyond cheddar, beyond Gruyere, beyond brie, beyond Parmigiano Reggiano, there is: Kraft Processed Cheese Slices and Velveeta .

And, oh man, don't get me started on hacker ("haxx0r") lingo. prOn is just the tip of the iceberg, as you've probably gleaned from some of the enthusiastic comments you've recieved thus far. my personal pet peeve is "teh," as in "teh excellent" or "teh stupid," etc. It seems to me that something has gone seriously, seriously wrong if people are suddenly misspelling "the" on purpose. But then again, I make my living as a writer/editor, so I'm bound to be driven batty by this sort of thing.
